Welcome to UMIC

United Malaysian Indian Club (UMIC) is a non-profit online multiracial egroup formed to cater to the everchanging and varied needs of our community. We embark on a wide range of activities, online and off-line for the very young to the young at heart. From sports, enrichment dialog, brainstorming, ways to enhance the quality of life, promote economic development, outings, gatherings, celebrations, charity and educational activities, just name it!

This club was formed with the objective to serve the community and share the best among the community. We have many well experienced and reliable members in the club who can carry out our objectives and our missions to a greater height. Todate, we have successfully organised numerous gatherings, few charity projects and few sports activities. These memorable events have brought us together, developed a friendship bond besides creating 'unity' which is lacking among our community.

Current Activity - Seminar Kecemerlangan UPSR

Students

UMIC is co-sponsoring the Seminar Kecemerlangan UPSR peringkat Daerah Kuala Selangor dan Sabak Bernam, specifically for the estimated 150 students from 24 Tamil schools in the area. The program is being organised by SJKT Ladang Sungai Buloh and Majlis Guru - Guru Besar Daerah Kuala Selangor & Sabak Bernam.

The seminar was held on:

Date: 28th June 2008
Time: 8am - 4pm
Venue: Dewan Sri Subramaniaar Alayam, Batu 2, Jalan Kelang, Kuala Selangor (the main road towards Kuala Selangor town).

The program started at 8.30am. The first session (answering English paper was being handled by Mrs Raj from SJKT Methodist Kapar). There were about 105 students who registered while about 10-15 have not done so at that time. Estimated 130 students came from 22 schools. Those from Sabak Bernam (2 schools were not able to make it due to transport and lack of teachers). The next session was from 9.30am to 10.30am followed by opening ceremony and VIP speech till about 12pm. The VIPs were OMS Group of Companies' director P.Thiagarajan (sponsor), Selangor State Education Department's Tamil Schools Coordinator Mr Vallikannu, and UMIC's representative Mr Gopal. The student took lunch at 12.45pm, and the session continued at 1.30pm until 5.00pm.

Five speakers were invited to provide tips and guidance for the students (most of those who attended were 7As candidates), each covering one subject. Compared to last year, this time the students had a table to write on and the hall was air-conditioned. Beside sponsoring lunch and token fee for the speakers (Total RM950), UMIC also provides a small token (RM50) for the most participative student, to be selected by the organizers.

Since there were many calls to organise a similar program for the average students, the organizers plan to hold a workshop in July. More updates will posted once available.

Back to School 2008

Back To School 2008

[UPDATED ON 14 JAN 2008]

As mentioned previously, we had to reschedule the handing over ceremony for BTS (Back to School) 2008 from Sunday 6th January to 10th January. On that day, we went to SJKT Ladang Sungai Buloh and had a simple session to hand over 38 bags to the students, complete with 2 sets uniform, 2 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs socks, water bottle, and stationery. The ceremony began at 10.30am and ended at 11.45am.

Details of expenses will be posted once the project account is closed. Those who require receipts are advised to contact us.

[UPDATED ON 8 JAN 2008]

Back To School 2008 by UMIC was successfully held in two of the schools last
Sunday 6/1/2008. The handing over ceremony for SJKT Ld Sg Buloh has been
postponed to Thursday 10/1/2008 at 10am (public holiday).

Our initial estimation was for 76 students, but due to last minute additions
we ended up sponsoring 92 students in total:

SJKT Bukit Darah - 36
SJKT Ldg Sg Buloh - 38
SJKT Ldg Bradwall - 12
Children of single parents under UMIC Charity Wing - 6

Due to the increase in students, we face a shortage of funds and hope more
contributions can be generated. Excess fund will be used for the weekend
extra classes for UPSR students.

Members gathered a day earlier to arrange the items according to
requirements, which took about 3 hours.

One group of UMIC members went to SJKT Ldg Bradwall in Siliau Seremban while
another group went to SJKT Bukit Darah, Sg Buloh.

At SJKT Bkt Darah, the bags (with 2 sets of uniform, 2 pairs of shoes,
stationery, water bottle, 3 pairs of socks) were handed over by one of our
wellwishers Mr Vijayakumar. Also present was another wellwisher Mr Suresh.

The parents of the students were also present, and UMIC took this
opportunity to provide information on our group. The parents were surprised
to hear that we have more than 4000 members all over the world. We
highlighted that the contributors (that's you!) hope to see the children
studying well, and urged the parents to pay more attention to their
children's education, by working closer with teachers, PTA and the school
management.

The ceremony was over at around 11.30am.

We thank you all for the support and encouragement given to ensure that BTS
2008 was a roaring success.

We have many other education related activities lined up for the schools,
and hope to have your continuous support.

[UPDATED ON 3 JAN 2008]

As of 3/1/2007, pledges and collected amount is RM10351, which is 90.8% of our target, RM11,400. This is able to cover the cost for 70 out of expected 76 students. The sponsorship drive will close on Friday 4th January, 2008.

Our Back to School 2008 (BTS) will be formally concluded on this Sunday with the handing over of the items. Thus we would like to invite sponsors, members, and all wellwishers to attend the handing over ceremony as below:

Date: Sunday 6th January 2008

Time: 10am - 12pm

Venue: SJKT Bukit Darah, Sg Buloh

The school is accesible via Sg Buloh - Kuala Selangor road, and is opposite Saujana Utama (Glomac housing project). Can be accessed via Guthrie Corridor as well from Shah Alam.

Time: 2pm - 3.30pm

Venue: SJKT Ldg Sg Buloh, Bukit Rotan Kuala Selangor.

This school is next the Royal Kampung Kuantan Golf Resort, and is about 7KM from Kuala Selangor town.

The handing over of the items for SJKT Ladang Bradwall, Seliau will be announced as soon as we can confirm the date and time, expected to be this weekend as well.

The items will be given to the students, and it will be a great pleasure indeed to meet the students that you are helping. Your presence will at the very least motivate them to do better in their studies. Also, this is a golden opportunity to set foot into a Tamil school, meet the teachers and get a taste of the environment. So, we hope to see you there.

[UPDATED ON 31 DEC 2007]

As of 31/12/2007, pledges and collected amount is RM8151, which is 71.5% of our target, RM11,400. This is able to cover the cost for 53 out of expected 76 students, which is about 69.7%.

[UPDATED ON 28 DEC 2007]

Current collection stands at RM6451, which is 56.58% of our target.

[UPDATED ON 26 DEC 2007]

Thank you all for the support. Even with the festive season holidays around, BTS 2008 has managed to garner contribution amounting to RM4551 which is able to cover costs for 24 students out of the estimated 76 students. That means we have covered 39.9% of cost and 31.6% of the students. We have also received pledges to sponsor stationeries and bags for all the students from two well-wishers.

We expect to close the sponsorship period by 31st December in order to facilitate purchase of the uniforms and shoes. Thus, we hope that you will be able to help sponsor a student.

"Back to School" project is back again for the year 2008. This is our 3rd year and we thank the members for the support and understanding. Early this year we successfully concluded the project, whereby we sponsored 59 students from SJKT Bkt Darah and SJKT Ldg Sg Buloh who had difficulties in meeting the school expenses due to their unfortunate poor conditions. Photos of previous Back To School event can be found at http://www.umic.com.my . Previously, in the year 2006, we helped 35 students from SJKT Bkt Darah. Beyond just providing uniforms and school bags, we also helped to cover expenses for extra classes and school activities at both these schools.

Due to the support by the public via UMIC, the teachers, and also the effort by students and parents, we are able to announce that for the FIRST time in 17 years, SJKT Ldg Sg Buloh has produced a 7A student! The school's overall passing rate improved slightly from 9.1% to 11.7%. In the district of Kuala Selangor, SJKT Ldg Sg Buloh lies in third position, behind two other schools located in urban areas. As for SJKT Bukit Darah, the school maintained the single 7A student achievement from last year, while the passing rate improved vastly from 30.8% to 44.1%. In the near future, our target is to achieve 100% passing rate. Again, all this is only possible due to the overwhelming, continuous support and commitment shown by people from all walks of life, who contribute through us. The funds were used to cover the lunch expenses during weekend classes, purchase of study materials, payment of fees for student participation in events, etc.

Over the last 2 years, we have increasingly helped more students, and the trend continues this year. This year, we have identified about 76 poor students from SJKT Bukit Darah in Sg Buloh, SJKT Ladang Sg Buloh in Bkt Rotan, and SJKT Ldg Bradwall, Siliau, Seremban. These students are facing difficulties to step foot into school again due to their unfortunate family backgrounds of single mothers, labourers, phyisically/mentally disabled parents, medically affected parents, etc. The parents can't afford to provide these young souls the education and the study materials which will provide them a better future and to contribute to the community growth. This project is in line with our focus and objective to assist poor students to continue to excel their education and to kill off the young age school dropout rates.

The breakdown and total cost are as below:
1. SJKT Bkt. Darah, Sg Buloh - 29 (3 students are going to Form 1)
2. SJKT Ladang Sg Buloh, Bkt Rotan - 35 (Expected)
3. SJKT Ldg Bradwall, Siliau - 12
Total is 76 students (Expected)
Estimated total expenses - RM 11,400

Please be assured that we welcome donation in ANY amount. We shall pool the donations and then distribute it accordingly. So if you plan to give RM5 or RM10 or RM50, please go ahead. If you want share with your friends/family and donate RM10/30/50/100/xxxx, please do so.

The students list is available in the section below on this website. Those without access to website may request the list from the contact persons below. Similar to last year, interested donors can adopt one or more students from the student list which has been published by UMIC Charity Wing . The approximate cost per student based on age will be as below:

2. Std 2 is RM130
3. Std 3 is RM150
4. Std 4 is RM150
5. Std 5 is RM180
6. Std 6 is RM180
